Sensitive Measurement of Optical Nonlinearities Using a Single Beam

چکیده
We report a sensitive single-beam technique for measuring both the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient for a wide variety of materials. We describe the experimental details and present a comprehensive theoretical analysis including cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption. In these experiments, the transmittance of a sample is measured the propagation path ( z ) of a focused Gaussian beam. The sign and magnitude of the nonlinear refraction are easily deduced from such a transmittance curve (Z-scan). Employing this technique, a sensitivity of better than 1/300 wavefront distortion is achieved in n2 measurements of BaF2 using picosecond frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser pulses. In cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption, it is possible to separately evaluate the nonlinear refraction as well as the nonlinear absorption by performing a second Z scan with the aperture removed. We demonstrate this method for ZnSe at 532 nm where two-photon absorption is present and n2 is negative.

Measurement of laser-induced refractive index change of inverted ferroelectric domain LiNbO3.
Optical nonlinearities of periodically poled LiNbO(3) crystals were investigated by the single beam Z-scan technique with a continuous wave (cw) laser beam at 532 nm. The nonlinear optical absorption coefficient and refractive index change are determined to be 8.1 x 10(-6) cm/W and 2.6 x 10(-4) at 0.5 MW/cm(2) light intensity, respectively. Both sign and magnitude of the measured refractive non...

Polyurethane closed cell (PUCC)/SiO2 nanocomposites have been prepared by using in situ polymerization approach. The third-order optical nonlinearities of PUCC/SiO2 nanocomposites, dissolved in DMF are characterized by Z-scan technique at the measurement wavelength of 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive (NLR) indices and nonlinear absorption (NLA) coefficients of samples were calculated from close...

There are several techniques in use for non-linear refractive index measurement, namely, interferometric techniques, in which conventional inter-ferometers are used, degenerate for wave mixing (DFWM), and z-scan, Each of these techniques suffers from some shortcmings. For example conventional interferometers like Fabry-Perot and Twyman-Green need high quality optical components, unwanted refl...
متن کاملEffect of Thickness on Structural and Morphological Properties of AlN Films Prepared Using Single Ion Beam Sputtering
Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films have potential applications in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. In this study, AlN thin films with different thicknesses were deposited on silicon substrate by single ion beam sputtering method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra revealed that the structure of films with thickness of - nm was amorphous, while the polycrystalline hexagonal AlN with a...
متن کاملFrequency-Resolved Optical Gating Using Cascaded Second-Order Nonlinearities
We demonstrate frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) using cascaded second-order nonlinearities (up-conversion followed by down-conversion). We describe two different cascaded second-order beam geometries—selfdiffraction and polarization-gate—which are identical to their third-order nonlinear-optical cousins, except that they use second-harmonic-generation crystals instead of (weaker) thirdo...
